Central New Jersey

Somerset County NJ communities and four neighboring counties

From Bridgewater’s family neighborhoods to Bernardsville’s estate homes, from Princeton’s walkable downtown to Westfield’s commuter lines, Mary K. Van Ness knows Central New Jersey community by community.

One broker, every town I list in

Central New Jersey is not one market. Somerset County feels different from Mercer. Bernardsville is not Bridgewater. Before we write an offer or list a home, I make sure you understand the town you are buying into or selling out of. Taxes, schools, commute, character, and the real feel of a Saturday morning.

Lifestyle & Character

Family suburbs in the south, horse country in the north

The southern half is built around family life: parks, neighborhood pools, weekend soccer, downtown Somerville for dinner. Move north and the county opens up. Duke Farms in Hillsborough, the Somerset Hills around Bernardsville and Far Hills, equestrian estates, hiking at Sourland Mountain and Schiff Nature Preserve.

Schools

Several of the strongest districts in Central Jersey

Bernards Township, Hillsborough, Watchung Hills Regional, and Montgomery anchor the county’s most-requested districts. Bridgewater-Raritan, Franklin, and Branchburg are solid in their own right. Mary helps families weigh the trade-offs between district strength, commute, and house budget.

Commute & Connectivity

Highway spine plus two train lines

NYC Commuter Belt

Middlesex County

At a Glance

The county with the most range

Middlesex covers more ground than any of Mary’s other counties, in every sense. NYC commuter towns on the Northeast Corridor in the north. Princeton-adjacent suburbs in the south. Denser, more urban pockets around New Brunswick. A long stretch of family neighborhoods in between.

Princeton Anchor

Mercer County

At a Glance

Princeton sets the tone, the rest of the county fills it in

Princeton anchors the top of the market and pulls the cultural energy with it. Hopewell, Pennington, and the surrounding villages bring quiet historic charm. Hamilton, Lawrence, and Ewing handle the workhorse market. Robbinsville and East Windsor draw families looking for newer builds.

Lifestyle & Character

University-town energy plus real countryside

Walkable Nassau Street, the Princeton Battlefield, the Princeton University campus, and the D&R Canal towpath all sit within a short drive. Sourland Mountain trails up in Hopewell. Schools

One of the deepest school benches in the state

West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional, Princeton Public Schools, Hopewell Valley Regional, and Robbinsville all hold strong reputations. Lawrence and Hamilton mix solid districts with respected magnet and charter options. Choices here are about fit, not whether there’s a good fit.

Commute & Connectivity

South Jersey Value

Burlington County

At a Glance

Where your dollar goes further

Burlington gives you South Jersey value with a Philadelphia commute. Generally lower property taxes than the northern counties, more land for the dollar, and a wide range of housing from historic colonials to newer suburban builds. The Pinelands stretch fills the eastern half.

Historic main streets and real backyards

Walk historic main streets in Moorestown, Mount Holly, and Bordentown. Lakes and pine forests around Medford. Ocean County

At a Glance

More space, more shore, more for your money

Ocean County stretches from barrier island beach towns along the Jersey Shore all the way back to the Pinelands. Property taxes run lower than most of New Jersey. Active-adult communities are woven throughout the county.

Southern Ocean County runs smaller districts where a single school covers the whole community. Mary can help families weigh district fit against the house and lot they’re actually looking for.

Commute & Connectivity

Garden State Parkway is the lifeline

The Parkway runs the full length of the county and connects to the New Jersey Turnpike north. NJ Transit North Jersey Coast Line reaches Point Pleasant and Lakewood-area commuters heading toward New York Penn. For most of the county, driving is the primary commute mode.
